A sarcophagus was used to bury the pharaohs, kings, leaders of Egypt (and Greece and Rome) They were incredibly detailed and used as a coffin but often also to contain a coffin. The wealthy citizens of Egypt were also able to be laid to rest in a sarcophagus as a show of their wealth in life. A typical sarcophagus would be made of stone and instead of burying the deceased in the ground they would be placed in a tomb with gifts of wealth and other assorted goods to carry with them into the afterlife. The sarcophagus would often have hieroglyphs engraved into it that would tell the story of the deceased within.
The earliest stone sarcophagi were used by the third dynasty Pharaohs (reigning from 2686 to 2613 BC)
They are known to have magickal properties as curses were placed upon them to safeguard the deceased and their tombs from graverobbers. To this day caution is taken when any Egyptian tombs are found for fear of setting free an ancient evil.
